Women the majority in clubs, survey finds
MOUNT PROSPECT, Ill. - Women account for 55 percent of the people who work out regularly at health clubs, according to a 2007 survey by the National Sporting Goods Association.

The survey found that the majority of participants in aerobic workouts were women, while men accounted for 64 percent of those who said they regularly lift weights.

Not surprisingly, 85 percent of yoga participants were women.

Exercise walking drew the greatest number of female participants, 56.1 million. Swimming, with 28.4 million, was second.

The defined a participant as someone age 7 or older who participated in sport six times or more within the year.

The NSGA report is based on a survey of 20,000 U.S. households. In addition to the number of participants and frequency of participation, the report provides demographics by age, gender, education, presence of children, metro areas, household income and region of the country. It's available to NSGA members for $395, and to non-members for $495.
